Carpentaria Golf Club

Far in the north of the Australian continent, on the Cape York Peninsula and 800 kilometers to the northwest of Cairns lies the Carpentaria Golf Club. The club facility is located in Weipa, the largest town on the peninsula with a population of more than 3,000 and is known for its huge bauxite stores. The course is small but excellent, with 9 holes and 18 tees, and stretches across rather flat terrain. The lanes are surrounded by trees that give shade in the tropical climate and at the same time require golfers to make precise hits. The Carpentaria Golf Club has a friendly and familial feel. Although it is not open to the public, the club is happy to receive guests on its course on request. Club life is very lively as a result of many social and athletic events. Carpentaria Golf Club features a pro shop, a bar, and a bistro. This is a popular meeting place after a game for a cool drink or a delicious meal. A practice area is also available to players for warming up and training. The area around Weipa is very interesting historically. A little further north, at Duyfken Point, Dutch researcher Willem Jansz was the first European to see the coast of Australia, 164 years before James Cook landed there.
