Cooktown Golf Links

A links course in the far north of Australia’s eastern coast. The Cooktown Golf Links lies about five kilometers south of Cooktown on Quarantine Bay Road on the Cape York Peninsula. The club boasts a beautiful 9-hole course which can be played with two tees. The fairways have a total length of 4,297 meters (par 65). The course is a public golf course. It stretches across an originally sandy area surrounded by wonderful tropical bushland. Today, the fairways run along dense, well-groomed grass. The Cooktown Golf Links borders on Walker Bay and the Annan river. The impressive Mount Cook can be seen from the fairways, and the surroundings present an unparalleled scenic beauty. The club features a flawless irrigation and drainage system, as a result of which golfing is even possible during dry periods or after rain. Cooktown Golf Links is the northernmost golf course on the east coast. The course is suitable for all handicaps but still special, since a fierce wind continuously blows here, usually from the southeast. Cooktown can best be reached by car on the Mulligan and Kennedy Highway. From Cairns, the car trip takes just three and a half hours. It’s worth it! For those interested in history, it should be mentioned that James Cook landed here in 1770 to repair his Endeavor. It had run aground in the Great Barrier Reef.
